In God We Trust Pennies from Heaven

Whether this story is fact or fiction doesn’t matter to me. It is a good story. It had a positive impact on me that continues today. Warning: the story may change your view of life every time you see a penny on the ground. You will notice a smile on my face when I find a penny or other coin on the street. I hope it works for you too; pennies from heaven.

Many believe finding a penny on the ground is good luck, a gift from the angels above, or something similar. Here’s a story that explains why some of us always pause, pick up the coin, and smile.

Not to long ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend with her husband’s employer.  My friend, Madison, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy and invited them to stay at his beautiful vacation home on the beach.

The weekend was going well, and Madison was grateful to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. Her husband’s employer was quite generous and treated her and her husband to the finest restaurants in the area. Madison was delighted for the special treatment and she was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were walking to the entrance of an exclusive restaurant one evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Madison and her husband. He paused suddenly, looked down on the pavement, and bent over to pick up something.

Madison wondered if dropped something but she didn’t see anything on the sidewalk except an old penny. Her husband’s boss quickly reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up to his eyes and a big smile came across his face. He put the penny in his pocket as if he had found a small fortune. How strange, Madison thought. What excited this wealthy man so much when he found a mere penny? Why did he even bother to stop and pick it up?

Throughout the meal, the entire penny affair nagged at Madison. Finally, she couldn’t take it any longer. She casually mentioned that her son once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he picked up on the sidewalk had some value.  Another smile came across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket and took out the penny. He gave it to her to look at. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

‘Take a close look at it,’ he said. ‘Read what it says.’ She read the words on the penny ‘  United States of America .’  ‘Keep reading.’ ‘One cent?’  ‘There’s more, keep reading.’ ‘In God we Trust?’  ‘Yes, that’s it!’  ‘And?’, she asked…

The boss explained, ‘And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy to me, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I reflect on that inscription. It is minted on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it.

God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him. Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I stop briefly and pray. I pause to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as my response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God’s way of reaching out to me, starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful! ‘

When I was at the gas station the other day, I found a penny on the ground next to the pump. I paused, bent over and picked it up. At that moment I realized that I had been worrying about things I cannot change. I read the words, ‘In God We Trust,’ and had to smile. Yes, God, I get the message.

Since reading the story, it seems that I have found a lot of pennies, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient.

June Another Weak Month for Retail Sales

The nation’s stores reported dismal monthly sales for June and a recovery in retailing is unlikely in the near future. Yesterday (Thursday, July 9), the industry posted a 4.9 percent sales decline for June, in contrast to a 1.9 percent increase a year ago when tax rebate checks were burning holes in everyone’s pockets. The current drop in retail sales is the longest negative streak on record according to Thomson Reuters, as reported by the NY Times (Weak Month for Retail Sales –

  • Dillard’s declined 14 percent
  • Nordstrom declined 10 percent
  • Saks fared better but still down 4.4 percent
  • Macy’s down 8.9 percent and J. C. Penney drops 8.2 percent.

The good news, consumers’ savings rates continue to increase and deep discounting is rampant; it is a great time to pick up new clothes for sure. What does this mean for your business? It highlights the importance of your business planning process as well as the adjustments required to address evolving economic conditions. Also, the need to leverage technology to market your business has never been more important. Look for synergism with partners and business associates. Continue reading
